A friend reminds me that you can sift through ash for the laughter of flowers. Everyone in the neighborhood is walking around in beanies my favorite color blue. At work, I notice a bird perch in a lofted window, overlooking the sunny shop like some spectacular canyon. He peers over the ledge at me, and then glances all around, as if searching for an opening to dive into. My phone lights up every time she edits the lyrics in her new song. He tells me that joy and discipline have been hanging in his rearview mirror for months. He is just stating fact, but I think it’s a poem. I watch a toddling baby in pink plastic clogs and soft baggy high waters step off the curb with her mom to cross the street. Instead, she sits down to save her blossoming balance. Cars wait, smiling, but she gets swooped up by her little hips, and together they saunter off into the world. Tiny legs dangle heavy, bubblegum pendulums swaying in the spring. I tap a wire into the wall so that my pothos can grow a little into the arch of my new doorway. Maybe I’ll stay a while. I’m letting myself daydream again. I nervous shake and drift off. It scares the hell out of me. This was all, probably, happening last week, too. I think the point is, though, I saw them this week.
All the world's goings-on, all the more wondrous when we notice them. One reads to the end and realizes the necessity of really being where we are, when we are there. ❤️
This was a lovely collection of noticing. I also noticed some Joy-like tiny tenders. I've discovered her recently, and am quite grateful.
I go on "awe walks" most mornings. I try to notice as much of the natural beauty around me as I can. This week is spring awakening with chilly pelting rain morphing into warmer weather, fat robins with worms dangling from their beaks, trees budding in pinks and whites and my favorite hawk gliding on the morning breeze.
There's a lake near my house. When I walk by, sometimes I see one or two people fishing there. A few days ago, I caught up with an old friend who loves to fish. We hadn't spoken in too long. Last time he visited, we chatted for a while by the lake. During our phone catch-up, he asked me if people had been fishing lately. I reported that I had seen a few people here and there.
This morning, I visited the lake. There were at least 20 people fishing. I took a video and sent it to my friend. He loved it.
yesss the seeing is the trick. it always makes me feel like I'm coming back to myself when I notice myself noticing. my favorite banal beauty lately is the wave form made in space by the nodding head of a little kid trying not to fall asleep on the metro.
